Different arguments on the morals of eating meat have been presented in different forms and ways. Some scholars have come up to base their arguments in relation to the issues that have become uncomfortable around the society and the individuals. The society views issues related to the consumption of meat and other edible foods in several but unique ways. A particular concentration will cover the work of Samantha Jacob’s ‘On the Morality of Eating Meat.’
Samantha Jacob’s argument on the morals of eating meat is presented in her book where she argues that the choice of eating meat is highly dependent on the affordability. On the other hand, in some of the communities, especially in the developed countries, eating meat is viewed as a way of choosing between the adaptation methods or norm owing to the menu and the ethical conducts. Most of the values and morals are highly influenced by the authority’s final opinion, and it is rare for people to object (Bratanova, Loughnan and Bastian 194).
The basic ethical conduct in the society judges the behavior of eating meat as an act, which is unjustifiable, and people should refrain from it for as long as they live. The vegetarians who observably consider ethics as a priority objective condemn the practices involved in the agricultural production of meat. Ideally, the proponents of consumption of meat according to Samantha interdepend on the morality and objective strategies in the scientific interventions. Technological advancement provides a boundary in the refining process and manufacturing of meat in most of the industries (Bratanova, Loughnan and Bastian 194).
Cultural and religious arguments
The practices of culture and the values of different denominations have influenced the decision-making process on the production and consumption of meat. In Samantha’s book, the clergy highlights the story of Moses on the illegitimacy of consuming meat, explaining that it was a sign of lack of purification. Actually, the factors and elements of eating meat have led to the arguments surrounding the methods of rearing. Most of the individuals familiar with the consumption of meat argue that the form of the factory, where meat is prepared, is the concern. Other people object to the ways and means of killing animals, which certainly becomes a problem especially to the Muslim community.
Lifestyle and wellness surrounding the consumption of dairy products and fish have been on the rise since most of the people prefer keeping fit and observing a confident and comfortable body. The chronic diseases that accompany the consumption of meat have been detected and the most popular one being cancer and gout. Samantha’s argument is based on the self-esteem realization of an individual’s lifestyle. The nutritionists have applied the health measures surrounding the individual’s decision-making process on the consumption of meat as a factor in creating psychological discomfort for most people. It is unethical to provide an outline based on the person’s decision to consume meat and the productivity means. Arguments regarding the effects caused by trauma when a person discovers a change in his/her body owing to the consumption of meat is unpleasant. It is advisable to consider issues such as adherence to health at whatever costs or circumstances.
According to the American Psychological Association, people decide on tackling issues that instill a difficult process of decision-making in them. It is obvious that the mental process outlines the basic understanding of the issues that may affect the human mind and control over their behaviors. During this process, individuals experience cognitive inability, which causes denial for the rest of the future life. An experiment conducted in 2011 revealed that the consumption of meat might trigger mental distortion to individuals, especially when the animals were mentally retarded. Such issues may appear morally incorrect, and the society fails to address the realization of the ethical damage it causes to individuals. There is self-deception in the process, and the anticipation of meat consumption is high whenever people experience denial. The society covers issues that may provide the realization of the discomfort of an individual.
According to Samantha, human beings are keen on their consciousness in a moral perception as compared to the animals that lack rights to defend themselves on the consumption of meat. Human rights provide an outline of the behaviors and moral facts about how human beings should carry out themselves based on the platforms necessary to the laws that govern human behaviors, which are not in the animal kingdom. The ethicists argue out that the consumption of meat is aimed at adjusting the beliefs and misconducts rather than focusing on the vegetarian’s way of understanding issues (Bratanova, Loughnan and Bastian 195). In other terms, rather than focusing on the concept of the cultural values and moral upbringing, the consumption of meat centers much on the behavioral approach that provides a necessity for the same approach.
Milk and eggs
One of the arguments highlighted by Samantha Jacobs was the idea of categorizing animals as vegetarians, and the vegans considering the diets they all watch. The ethical vegans avoid consumption of the dairy products due to the consequences of premature deaths and other body illnesses. The production of milk from the dairy cattle occurs immediately after the birth of the calf, and the scholars point out that the maternal disconnection affects the animals psychologically. The life expectancy for a normal cow is up to twenty years, but this practically goes to five years only. In addition, after the production of milk for the first five years, the cow is considered unreliable and unproductive, thus sent to the slaughterhouse. This is an infringement on the animal’s rights, and it is considered as an immoral and unethical misconduct since the abuse of the cow is very unjustifiable. Organizing for the consumption and slaughter process constitutes a traumatizing event, which causes the disconnection and detachment of the animals in their own Kingdom. In other words, the morality of eating meat has led to the assumption and a notion of crossing boundaries whereby humans deliberately consume the other animals without permission.
The animal consciousness depicts that people should consider eating meat depending on the environmental factors. It is important to realize that whenever people are pressured and have an ultimately bad feeling and negative energy on societal issues, then the probabilities of such issues being inaccurate are so true. The production process for the psychological trauma experienced by both individuals and consumers of the meat products should be considered for the betterment of the awareness and relationship created in the system. Individuals should follow moral behaviors and upright stability for the sake of a neutral understanding.
